Innovative disaster workshop
Monday, 19 November 2007
Health and disaster experts with “ground zero” experience will come together next month in an SPH workshop designed to prepare Australia's health and support organisations. The workshop, Health Aspects of Disasters, will be held at the School 19-23 November, and feature significant input from military, civilian, non-government and international organisations. Case studies will be presented by those with direct experience of major events, such as the Aceh tsunami, Pakistan’s 2005 earthquake, New Orleans’ Hurricane Katrina and the 2004 Bali bombing. Focus areas will include public health and medical responses to disasters; effects on health, nutrition and mortality; infectious disease and nutritional emergencies; pandemic scenarios, refugee camps, psychosocial effects, co-ordination of donor and aid agencies; and disaster preparedness. The project was designed, and will be implemented in close collaboration with, the Centre for Military and Veterans’ Health which is a joint initiative of UQ, with Adelaide and Charles Darwin Universities. Health Aspects of Disasters is designed to be professional development for health professionals, practitioners and administrative staff, as well as being available to Masters students. It is aimed at both Australian and the Asia Pacific region. Professor of International Health and workshop co-ordinator, Richard Taylor, said the workshops would improve Australia's health community's preparedness through dissemination of disaster response knowledge and skills by experienced people. “A key message will be that surveillance and outbreak investigation is critical to an effective response and disease control,” Professor Taylor said. More information can be found here or by emailing enquiries@sph.uq.edu.au.

SPH seminar urges new approach to environmental health
Thursday, 15 November 2007
Emerging issues, such as water security, are driving new directions in environmental health, says University of Western Australia’s Professor Philip Weinstein, who will give a seminar at SPH on the 15th of November. Professor Weinstein will explain how new approaches are needed to deal with these new environmental health issues, which also include the highest-ever global incidence of mosquito-borne diseases, and the impact of climate change on the dynamics of even the best understood environmental health issues. He argues that a better understanding of the nature of the relationship between ecosystem health and human health is required if effective and sustainable public health interventions are to be developed. During the seminar, Professor Weinstein will illustrate this new approach with three examples: Water quality and birth defects; soil salinisation and Ross River virus; and land use and asthma. All are welcome to attend the seminar which will be held: Time/date: 11am-12pm, Thursday 15 November Venue: ES Meyers Lecture Theatre, Mayne Medical School, The University of Queensland, Herston campus More info: Contact John Cohen: john.cohen@uq.edu.au or 07 3365 5446 Full details of SPH’s seminar program can be found here.
