Professor Alan Lopez elected to US Institute of Medicine
Tuesday, 13 October 2009The Institute of Medicine (IOM) of the National Academies is a Washington DC-based non-profit organisation that offers scientifically informed analysis and independent guidance to policy-makers, professionals, community leaders and the general public. Professor Lopez, Head of the School of Population Health, was elected by IOM members on the basis of his involvement and influence in critical public health issues. His role as Foregin Associate member will include consultation on health problems being considered by the Institute.
Professor Lopez said he looks forward to the opportunity to play a role in an organisation which conducts research into public health priorities including infectious and chronic diseases, child health, ageing and public health responses to disasters.
“The work of the IOM is guiding choices by US policy makers that can make an impact on the health of communities around the world, “ he said.
Professor Lopez’s election to the IOM was officially announced at the organisation’s annual meeting on 12 October.
