Legalise snus to reduce smokers' deaths
Wednesday, 11 March 2009Prof Wayne Hall and Dr Coral Gartner argue that introducing varieties of smokeless tobacco which are low in carcinogenic nitrosamines could reduce deaths among hard core smokers in Australia in an article published in the journal Public Health
<http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19223052?dopt=Abstract> .
Dr Gartner discusses the controversial policy of tobacco harm reduction in a Sydney Morning Herald article where she says that lifting Australia's ban on the controversial moist tobacco powder that is not smoked, but placed under the lip, could reduce the human toll among people who can't or won't stop smoking if they switch to these less harmful products.
"Your best course of action is to quit smoking, but if you're not going to do that then this is second best," Dr Gartner said.
