New Epidemiology program
Wednesday, 29 April 2009The new program – available at Masters, Graduate Diploma and Graduate Certificate levels – will provide students with structured coursework aimed at equipping them with advanced epidemiological and biostatistical skills. It meets the demand by government and non-government agencies for health professionals with high-level competencies in epidemiology, who can design, conduct and evaluate relevant research in a public health context.
Epidemiologists often specialise in communicable disease control, clinical epidemiology and non-communicable or chronic disease epidemiology. The job differs from other public health roles through its focus on methodological knowledge and skills, as opposed to, for example, public health project implementation.
Students of the new program can opt to specialise in Clinical Epidemiology. This specialisation will include courses covering cost effectiveness in health and medicine, decision-making in health care, clinical biostatistics, and a clinical epidemiology project. It will draw upon the School’s networks within Queensland hospitals, particularly the Queensland Clinical Trials Unit at the Princess Alexandra Hospital.
The new program means SPH is one of only a few Australian institutions to offer a specialised epidemiology program. Program co-ordinator, Professor Gail Williams, said that she anticipates that Epidemiology students will be those working, or intending to work, in the public health or clinical health sectors.
“Students may also be drawn from government or non-government organisations, and will include those seeking high-level skills in health research methods,” said Professor Williams.
Students wishing to enrol in the Epidemiology program should apply now. For more information, email enquiries@sph.uq.edu.au or call (+61 7) 3365 5345.
