Statistics in the real world
Wednesday, 1 July 2009The seminar, the first of the School’s ongoing monthly series on Quantitative Methodology, will be held Monday 6 July from 11am to 12pm in the Medical School’s ES Meyers Lecture Theatre. The seminar is free and open to all.
Organiser, Dr Mark Griffin, said the seminar series is aimed at the ‘average health scientist’.
“They will focus on the tools and mechanics behind health studies -- areas such as study and survey design, clinical trial management, data management, and statistics,” said Mark.
“These seminars will help the audience advance their skills in these areas, and will also introduce health scientists to staff members who are available to help them in these disciplines.”
Mark said the first seminar, led by Dr Michael Bulmer of UQ’s School of Mathematics and Physics, should be particularly interesting as it tackles one of the major frustrations of those studying statistics – how statistics relates to the ‘real world’.
“The seminar will show how a simulation of an island environment allows scientists to view and interact with the sample population being used in the statistical analysis.”
“Users can also develop a genuine feeling that their data aren’t simply a set of numbers, but are ‘real life’ measurements.”
