Biography:

Sarah completed undergraduate studies in 2001, obtaining a Bachelor of Science (Environmental Science) - with joint majors in Geography & Zoology disciplines. After a year off to gain working experience in Victoria, Sarah went on to obtain a First Class Honours in 2003 for her research into the management implications of natural and induced changes to Lake Clifton, Western Australia - a Ramsar listed groundwater fed system. In 2003, Sarah was introduced to the world of subterranean ecology working as a research assistant at the University of Western Australia before being employed as a Biological Specialist for the Water Corporation of WA from 2004-2009. During her employment with the Water Corporation, Sarah combined her practical knowledge of the water industry with her passion for integrating science and legal disciplines through her doctorate studies: investigating whether the regulatory framework in WA - ostensibly designed to protect stygofauna - really achieves that objective where competing human demands for groundwater resources exist. Sarah brings paralleled enthusiasm and work ethic into the School of Population Health’s NEW Environmental Health team – focused on integrating ecosystem and human health disciplines to meet emerging challenges within the public health sector resulting from global climate change. More specifically, Sarah is keen to establish new research programs that promote collaboration between academia, industry and key decision-making authorities to advocate sustainable use of QLD’s water resources to meet human needs while maintaining dependent ecosystem functions. FUNDING RECEIVED: UQ FirstLink Funding Round 2, 2009: $3,000; SPH Research Grant Development Scheme - 2009: $2,000. Memberships: Australian Water Association(AWA); International Society for Subterranean Biology (ISSB;
