The overarching goal of CPRC's research program is to build research capacity for understanding and influencing health behaviours, particularly physical activity, sedentary behaviour, and diet.

This is achieved via:

·      Identifying the modifiable individual, social and environmental determinants.
 ·      Understanding the health consequences of sedentary behaviour (prolonged sitting time) and overweight and obesity in specific population groups (eg, older adults, women with breast cancer).
 ·      Developing innovative mass-reach interventions for physical activity, sedentary behaviour, healthy eating and weight control.
 ·      Addressing evidence-based research translation, particularly for mass-reach health behaviour change programs.

CPRC’s research relates to global, national and state level chronic disease prevention goals. For example, the World Health Organization’s position paper on Diet, Nutrition and the
Prevention of Chronic Diseases identifies the importance of influencing ‘excess body weight and physical inactivity; the National Chronic Disease Strategy from the Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing places a strong emphasis on reducing the health burden related to physical inactivity and poor dietary practices. The Q2 Goals for Queensland (2009) emphasise evidence based initiatives to change poor diet, inactive lifestyles and rising obesity rates
