Course Coordinator: Ms Coralie Ober

Delivery Mode: External

Introduction

This course will provide you with an overview of issues related to the use and misuse of tobacco, alcohol and other drugs by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Patterns and statistics on alcohol and other drug use are presented, highlighting the health and social disadvantage disproportionately experienced by Indigenous people. Indigenous community-controlled responses are explored, and information is provided regarding a range of alcohol and drug programs that have been developed under the framework of harm minimisation.

Aims

The principal aim of this course is to provide health professionals with knowledge to support Indigenous community-controlled responses to alcohol and other drug issues and assist in developing culturally sensitive, complementary responses from mainstream health and human services.

Content

Specifically the course deals with the following topics:

  • The effect of colonisation in relation to alcohol and drug use
  • Recognition and response by government to alcohol and drug issues
  • Alcohol and drug use and its effects on Indigenous sub-groups
  • Indigenous controlled responses to alcohol and drug issues
  • Future directions and responses to alcohol and drug use

Assessment

Students are required to undertake an extensive case study of an Indigenous organisation working with alcohol and drug issues. The case study report, comprising three pieces of work, should feature a local Indigenous community alcohol and drug organisation/program.
