Issues in Indigenous Health

Introduction

This course provides an overview of current issues contributing to the health and well-being of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Australia. Particular attention will be given to the representation of these issues in the current media. It also addresses the full spectrum of social, cultural, political and environmental issues, while exploring ideas of health from both an Indigenous cultural perspective and that of a population health perspective. Examination of policy and program responses to these issues currently being initiated through Commonwealth and State health system and the community controlled health services will be undertaken.

Aims

The main objective of this course is to provide, through critical analysis, an overview of current issues contributing to the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Content

Specific topics include:

  • Epidemiology of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health
  • Commonwealth and State government policy
  • Indigenous management and control of health
  • Reconciliation and Indigenous health
  • Ethics and research in Indigenous health
  • The Stolen Generations
  • Alcohol, smoking and substance use and injury and violence
  • Diet and nutrition, diabetes and cardiovascular disease
  • Sexually transmissible disease, including HIV
  • Maternal and child health

Assessment

One written assignment and seminars.
