Indigenous Health Practice

Introduction

This course critiques current primary health care and public health practice for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, and the evidence base for these healthcare programs and practice. The influence of environmental, cultural, socio economic and political factors on health outcomes and healthcare practice in this context are examined.

Aims

The principal aims of this course are 1. to examine local and international experience in relation to cultural respect in healthcare for indigenous peoples 2. to provide an overview and critique current primary health care and public health practice in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health, 3. to critically analyse the evidence base for current and proposed health promotion, illness prevention, screening and intervention programs, and clinical guidelines in relation to health problems of importance to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people 4. to examine influences on and appropriate responses to specific health issues and target groups for healthcare in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Content

Specific topics include:

  • Maternal and Child Health programs in Indigenous communities
  • Screening programs and chronic disease management programs
  • Harm minimisation practice in relation to substance abuse
  • Practical responses to key health issues such as suicide and self harm, sexual Infections,
  • Communicable disease control in Indigenous communities
  • Isolated practice; Womens health; Custodial health

Assessment

Two written assignments, group discussion and examination
