Indigenous Health Policy

Introduction
This course examines the political context of Indigenous health, the development of Indigenous health and related policy, and the influence of cultural, socio economic and political factors on that policy evolution.
Aims
The principal aims of this course are 1. to provide an overview of the recent political and historical context of Indigenous health, 2. to critically analyse the evolution of recent policy frameworks for Indigenous health, 3. to examine specific health policies and strategies related to the key issues in Indigenous health in Australia.
Content
Specific topics include:
- Indigenous health policy: Commonwealth and State relationships
- Indigenous health and self determination: the Community health services
- Two way health: the Aboriginal Health Worker
- The National Aboriginal Health Strategy
- The Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody
- Queensland Health’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Policy
- The Office of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health
- The Aboriginal Framework Agreements
- New models of health service agreements: Coordinated Care Trials
- Cultural Respect Framework for Aboriginal and Torres strait Islander People
- Strategic responses to key health issues: eg Substance abuse, Mental Health, Sexual Health, Diabetes and Renal Disease.
Assessment
Two written assignments, group discussion and examination
